How to avoid getting sick when travelling: 5 practical tips

While traveling is an incredible experience, it can also be stressful and tiring for the body. The immune system can be weakened, making it more receptive to disease.  There are preventive measures you can take to avoid getting sick while traveling. Here are 5 practical tips to help you stay healthy during your stay.

Wash your hands regularly

It may seem obvious, but the first rule to avoid getting sick when you travel is to wash your hands regularly. It's surprising how many people don't wash their hands regularly. Make sure you wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet. If you don't have easy access to soap and water, use antiseptic wipes or a hand disinfectant containing at least 60% of alcohol. Also, avoid touching your face: the cold and flu virus can spread easily when it's transferred from your hands to your mouth, nose or eyes. If you must, be sure to wash your hands first.

Stay hydrated

When you're on the move, it's easy to become dehydrated without even realizing it. So make sure you drink enough water throughout the day, even if the temperatures aren't hot. If you don't like plain water, add a little lemon or fruit juice to improve the taste and increase your intake. You can also drink tea, which is delicious in some parts of the world.

Avoid street food

Although street food may look delicious and authentic, it can also be a source of viruses. These dishes can be prepared in unsanitary conditions and exposed to dangerous bacteria, and sometimes in the heat. If you want to sample local cuisine, it's best to choose restaurants that have good reviews and appear clean and well-maintained. Our immune systems may simply not be used to a new way of life.

Get enough sleep

Make sure you get enough sleep throughout your trip, as lack of sleep can weaken your immune system. If you're traveling in a time zone different from your home region, try to adapt quickly by getting enough rest at night and avoiding naps during the day.

Pack a first-aid kit

Eating habits can be turned upside down during a trip, and this can lead to digestive problems. It's a good idea to pack probiotics to strengthen your microbiota and help reduce the undesirable effects of an unaccustomed diet. Take along the essential medicines in your first-aid kit, as well as what you need for minor injuries. You can find them for a few dozen euros on Amazon or in any supermarket.

Before you leave, make sure your vaccinations are up to date.to ensure immunity against diseases specific to your destination.
