Canada is one of the countries that opens its doors to many refugees around the world. To facilitate access, the Canadian government has set up the eApp to replace the CRPPwhich has been widely criticized.
The CRPP and its limits
Launched in October 2021, the CRPP (Canadian Refugee Protection Portal) had to be stopped prematurely because it had many flaws. Its designers did not take into account all the obstacles that refugees and immigration consultants might face.
Firstly, most asylum seekers come from unstable countries (at war or in economic crisis). They are physically, psychologically and emotionally traumatized. What's more, the majority of them have no access to the Internet and are not proficient in the use of new technologies.
Furthermore, under the CRPP, refugees are not eligible for work permits. Another dysfunction that needs to be highlighted is that the CRPP required applicants to provide accurate information on the date of travel, relocation, etc., information that refugees do not have. This information is not available to refugees.
The eApp, the new system replacing the CRPP
It took less than a year after the launch of the CRPP for the eApp to see the light of day. This new system, launched on September 13, 2022, better meets the needs of all those involved in immigration to Canada. Refugees can complete their application after several sessions, to ensure they have all the information they need. They now have 90 days to do so, from the date the application is opened.
The eApp is also much easier to access and intuitive to use. Through this new platform, immigration officers are able to communicate with clients and their legal counsel or representative. Applicants can also follow the progress of their case at any time.
