Indian authorities have flagged the device as illegal under the country's strict regulations on satellite communication devices. Travelers must obtain prior authorization from the Ministry of Telecommunications to bring such devices into the country. Violation of these regulations may result in detention, confiscation of the device and legal sanctions.

How can I be sure that I am authorized to travel with the device?
Garmin provides a list of countries where these devices are regulated or prohibited.These include Afghanistan, Sudan, Cuba and Myanmar. It is therefore advisable to consult the regulations of the destination country if you plan to travel with a Garmin inReach or any other satellite communication device.
GNSS/GPS watches are no problem
GNSS/GPS watches, such as the Forerunner Or Fenix from Garmin, are generally safe to transport internationally. These devices are receivers liabilities which do not transmit signals to the outside world, relying solely on data from GNSS/GPS satellites to calculate parameters such as position and speed. As they do not send signals, they are not subject to the same restrictions as satellite communicators.
