A 60-year-old British man has been arrested in Thailand's Chiang Mai province for overstaying his 25-year visa. The man had arrived in Thailand in 2000 on a 30-day tourist visa and had never left the country since.

The man admitted to having arrived in Thailand in early 2000 on a tourist visa. He was living illegally, as his visa had not been renewed. He lived in Bangkok for 13 years and Chiang Mai for 12 years.
His identity has not yet been released since his arrest on Monday February 24, in Chiang Mai province, during an operation by the immigration services against illegal foreigners.
"After checking his name in our immigration system, he has been entering Thailand since 2000 and has never had another stamp in our system since then."

The man managed to renew his passport in 2018, although the document never received any further immigration stamps. He will be deported to Britain. The man had had a child with a Thai woman and was living jobless in the country, thanks to money from his family in Britain.
An officer involved in the operation told AFP that the man had been in Thailand for 9,135 days. The previous longest overstay was by a Pakistani, at 10 years.
