The launch of Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in the UK is already attracting a massive influx of applications from Europeans, with digital queues forming even before it officially comes into force.
As of yesterday, March 5, 2025, European nationals can start applying for their ETA for trips planned after April 2, 2025. This early opening of applications is intended to prevent a massive last-minute influx, and to enable smoother processing of authorizations.
The UK Home Office expects over 30 million travellers to use the ETA system each year. This colossal estimate augurs well for large digital queues, especially during the first months of implementation.

To meet this demand, the British government has set up a mobile application "UK ETA" (Google Android Or iOS) and a dedicated web portal. These platforms are designed to handle requests quickly, with automatic responses within minutes in many cases.
However, the standard processing time is 3 working days. Travelers are therefore encouraged to submit their requests well in advance to avoid delays in their travel plans.
It is important to note that the system does not save data in the event of an interrupted session.. Applicants should therefore be prepared to complete their application all at once to avoid losing their place in the digital queue.
Although the system aims to simplify the process of entering the UK, it is likely that the first few months of its launch will be marked by longer waiting times, particularly at airports which will have to check travelers' status.
