Evolving travel trends

Today's travel trends reflect a significant shift in traveler preferences, guided by values such as sustainability, authenticity and cultural immersion. Lesser-known destinations and off-the-beaten-track travel are gaining in popularity, offering unique experiences and a deeper connection with nature and local communities.

In a recent survey by American Express Travel, 89 % of respondents said they would like to travel to destinations they had never visited before.

Discovering slow travel

THE slow travelor slow travel, is becoming increasingly popular. Travellers are looking for longer stays, allowing them to better explore the places they visit and reduce their carbon footprint. The rise of responsible tourism is also a significant trend, with travelers looking to minimize their impact on the environment and support local sustainable development initiatives. According to an Ipsos survey conducted in 4 countries, 53 % of those questioned would like to slow down when visiting a country, city or region. The slow travel has become a real need for all those who want to get more out of life, and contributes greatly to the well-being of our planet.

Adventure and experience tourism are also gaining in popularity. Travelers seek challenges and outdoor activities, such as hiking, surfing, scuba diving and climbing, to experience unique and stimulating moments.

The paradox of eco-tourism

Tourist destinations are divided between the positive and negative aspects of tourism. Ecotourism can bring benefits in terms of preserving nature, raising environmental awareness and supporting local economies. On the other hand, increasing visitor numbers can lead to additional pressure on natural resources and habitat degradation. What's more, the construction of tourist infrastructures can alter fragile ecosystems and contribute to pollution.

According to a study Booking.com, 72 % of travelers believe that immediate action is essential, and that people should choose sustainable tourism options to preserve the planet for future generations. While results are consistent across all age groups, participants aged 46-55 (74 %) and Millennials (71 %) are the groups most likely to feel a sense of urgency about the need to act.

To overcome this paradox, it is important to implement sustainable practices, limit tourist flows where necessary, involve local communities in planning and promote responsible awareness among travelers. The aim is to find ways of enjoying the benefits of tourism while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and local cultures.

Digital dimensions

At the same time, digital travel continues to grow. Virtual experiences, such as online museum tours, virtual lectures and virtual reality guided tours, offer an alternative for those who prefer to stay at home or are unable to travel physically.

The chance to try bleisure

THE bleisure (a combination of the words "business" and "leisure") has been democratized in the business travel sector. Professionals are extending their stay to enjoy the destination in which they find themselves. The concept of bleisure has gained in importance in recent years, with 20% of business travelers practicing it regularly, representing 7% of all business trips, according to a study by Carlson Wagonlit Travel. The French seem particularly fond of this practice, with 24% of them doing it systematically, compared with 20% of Germans and 10% of English. What's more, half of these business travellers choose to be accompanied by a close friend or family member.

This is part of a quest for a better quality of life and work-life balance. Companies are also recognizing the benefits of bleisure, as it can contribute to employee satisfaction, productivity and retention. Tourist destinations and hotels are also adapting, with special offers and activities for bleisure travelers.

The capabilities of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly crucial role in today's travel trends. AIs facilitate searches (flights, hotels and activities) and bookings. AI-based chatbots and virtual assistants offer round-the-clock assistance, answering travelers' questions. AIs analyze traveler data to create tailored experiences, suggesting activities, itineraries and dining options based on individual tastes and interests.

AIs offer travelers smoother, more rewarding experiences. However, it's important to strike a balance between automation and human interaction to ensure positive, personalized experiences.

Health concerns

Health and safety have become a top priority for travelers. Strict health protocols, comprehensive travel insurance and destinations offering easy access to medical care are increasingly sought-after.

The importance of social networks

Social networks play an essential role in the dissemination of travel and tourism-related information. They have become a major source of content and inspiration for travelers. Social networks, such as Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok, are ideal platforms for sharing photos and videos of destinations and travel experiences, inspiring others to discover new places. Social media allow travelers to give recommendations and reviews of hotels, restaurants, attractions and more. According to an eDreams Odigeo survey, 42% of tourists book their vacations based on a destination's "Instagrammable" potential.
