Nigeria is in the process of modernizing its visa application process with the upcoming launch of the mobile application for e-Visas. This initiative aims to make it easier for international visitors to obtain visas, and to make the experience quicker and simpler.
Improving the visa application process
Nigeria's Minister of Home Affairs, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the government is committed to streamlining visa application procedures, particularly for short-term stays. The mobile application currently under development, called "Nigeria eVisa App", will enable users to submit all necessary documents, pay visa fees online and track the status of their application in real time, all from their smartphone.

Current context of Nigerian visas
Currently, travelers wishing to visit Nigeria are generally required to obtain a visa from a Nigerian embassy or online via the e-Visa system, which provides a visa on arrival. However, Nigeria has recently been criticized for increasing the fees for collecting biometric data from travelers on arrival, which have risen from 90 $ to 170 $ since October 2023. The total cost of an e-visa on arrival for a European citizen is therefore 278 $, including visa fees, biometrics fees and service fees.
The "Nigeria eVisa App"aims to revolutionize the visa application process, particularly for short-stay visitors such as artists, sports athletes and tourists. The Nigerian government is committed to scaling all its processes and infrastructures in line with global advances in technology, without compromising national security.
Who can apply for an e-Visa for Nigeria?
The e-Visa is valid for one short-term visit not exceeding 90 days and requires prior authorization in the form electronic travel authorization letter (eTAL). Nationals of African countries can apply for an eTAL for tourist or business travel, while citizens of other countries, including European states, can only obtain this eTAL/e-Visa for business travel.
The price of the e-visa and biometrics service varies according to the applicant's citizenship. Citizens of many countries are eligible to obtain an e-business visa for Nigeria.
