UK ETA increases from £10 to £16 today

From today, April 9, 2025, the cost of Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to travel to the UK will rise from £10 to £16, an increase of 60 %. This decision, announced by the UK Home Office in January, is still being criticized.

The teams at Visamundi were able to confirm that the fare had indeed increased this morning when accompanying their passengers.

An increase announced even before full deployment

ETA, a compulsory document for stays of less than 6 months in the UKhas been phased in since March 2025, and became essential for all European travelers on April 2. However, even before its widespread adoption, its initial rate of 10 pounds was revised upwards. From now on, travellers will have to pay around 18 € to obtain this document, which is valid for 2 years.

According to the British government, this increase is intended to reduce the immigration system's dependence on public funds, and should generate an additional £269 million a year.

A less competitive destination?

The UK is thus faced with a dilemma: how to remain attractive while increasing costs for visitors? With other European destinations offering more affordable alternatives without cumbersome formalities, this decision could well turn away some potential tourists.

For regular travelers, or those who have applied before today, their ETA remains valid even if the price has increased. No reminder of the difference is required.

The increase is a stark reminder that traveling to the UK post-Brexit now involves additional costs.
